Call for TURIN PHOTO FESTIVAL PDF Stampa E-mail

The call for authors for the 2nd edition of the TURIN PHOTO FESTIVAL which will be taking place in October 2009 is still open.

Locations and precise dates are in course of definition.

Open theme works are accepted, yet the festival’s two main themes focus on:

  • The Ethic of the feminine
  • The aesthetic of the metropolis
  • transformation

Themes

1.      The Ethic of the feminine

We hold the feminine issue so much at heart that in recent years we organised a number of exhibitions entitled Fotografia al Femminile (She-photography, trans.), where women were protagonists both as photographers and subjects of the photographs.

Women, and more in general the feminine, have been widely used and abused (with works sometimes verging to the ridiculous and grotesque) from an aesthetic point of view, especially in photography, TV commercials etc. therefore we wish to underscore the ethic aspect of the “female being” (in Italian the feminine, which is the interior essence of the female). Such ethic aspect is made explicit in a series of events in the real world in which women (and sometimes men too) act  with modalities typically belonging to the female being (i.e. with modalities which are typical of the feminine)

Some examples are:

Women’s efforts as to the survival of children and family in many areas of the world, even when these places are devastated by wars.

The ability of women living in the most disparate communities to maintain a high level of energy and joie de vivre even if in dire and sometimes forbidding conditions.

The effort of the women (generally more incline than men) to self-analysis and calling into question  personal and spiritual values by using different methodologies such as spiritual research or therapy.

Women’s inbuilt reliability in political and association commitment yet keeping their focus on children and family.

Women’s interest (another typical female trait, yet not uncommon in men) in passing on cultural and/or different spiritual traditions.

Women’s ability to become mothers in a cosmic sense and not just physically. In short their ability to receive and nurture not only their own children, but all those or that which may be in need, at any given time, of a mother.

2.      The aesthetics of the metropolis

The metropolises are one of the most important environments staging the future challenges of humanity.

Metropolises which are becoming increasingly bigger and harder, inhabited by millions of people and in continuous expansion, so much so that even large built-up areas which not so long ago were simply known as cities are now referred to as metropolises

Such fast expansion has induced economists, sociologists, anthropologists and city planners to formulate the concept of megalopolises - a cluster of gigantic metropolises which border with one another or have territorial connections.

Such metropolises, whatever their dimension, as well as generating conflict and problems of all kinds are carriers of an aesthetic, which is often disregarded yet very real.

Some examples:

Yesterday and today’s architecture and the encounter of different architecture, sometimes harmonising and sometimes in contrast with one another.

Hidden architecture private and familiar, rich or poor, such as courtyards, gardens, ravines.

Surviving natural landscapes, built up or not; which can be detached and independent from the non stopping metropolitan flux.

Big and small thoroughfares, scenario of the ceaseless ballet of the true masters of our civilisation - transport.

Day and night life - sometimes hectic and sometimes surprisingly slow-paced, quiet and broody, hidden in countless oasis of peace which survived in the creases of unbridled urbanisation.

And moreover the face of man, the true aesthetic protagonist all along. Whether in its individual essence or in groups of all kind, from the wandering mass to the more circumscribed and defined posse, such as those still rather unknown and investigated, as the young people and migrants.

3.      Transformation

As the focus of both science and religion, transformation is one of those issues which is somewhat of a taboo in a culture which hides behind the illusion of certainty and definitive like ours. A culture where, inconsciously, one always hopes in stability which in nature and in the universe exists for defined periods. From the infinitely fast and small of the radioactive isotopes, to the infinitely slow and large of the galaxies.

Among these two extremes are the life of man and its environment.

Some examples:

Death and its symbols

Lay, religious or magical passing rituals and transformation.

The psychological and physical changes in the evolutionary and all the ages ,and, why not, also in illness.

Environment’s negative and positive transformations

Social structure’s negative and positive transformations.

All is apparently created, all is apparently lost, all, in reality, is continuously transformed.

Together with the photographic proposals, focus talks, forums, workshops, projection of photographs in theatres and cinemas and other activities are also in the pipeline.

Deadline of the call for works is 30th March 2009. The event will be taking place in different locations from the beginning of October and mid November 2009.
